In this video (which premiered at our 2024 Celebration of Hope event on February 25th), CSS team members from each region share how we're providing neighbors with HOPE IN THE GOOD LIFE across 24,000 square miles of southern Nebraska.

Moderated by CSS Development Officer John Soukup, our panelists include CSS Executive Director Katie Patrick, CSS Director of e-Commerce Mario Racicot, and CSS Warehouse Manager John Haag. Thank you, Bill Meduna!

We celebrate CSS Vice President of Operations Bill Meduna and his twenty-four years at CSS. And because Bill is a "Bean Counter" by trade, here are a few impressive "CSS Bill" numbers. Bill was employed at CSS for 8,894 days (44% of his life!) During that time, he worked 6,031 work days and traveled 470,418 miles to and from work. Bill is so much more than a "numbers guy," though, as you can see by these photos shared by past and current CSS team members. Many images feature Bill's family working alongside him at CSS as volunteers. It's clear to see faith and family figure strongly in the “Bill Equation.” It's also evident that Bill wore many hats over the decades! His hard work and dedication to our mission blessed and brought HOPE IN THE GOOD LIFE to countless neighbors. But now, it’s time for a new adventure. Effective 11/3/23, Bill has retired from CSS and will now work alongside his family at Meduna Family Farms. Thank you, and God bless you, Bill Meduna!

Celebration of Hope 2023 Panel Discussion | The Global Refugee Crisis: A Catholic Response

Lincoln, Nebraska, is home to over 30,000 immigrants and refugees from approximately 150 different countries. Nebraska has a long history of resettling refugees, and in 2016, Nebraska resettled more refugees per capita than any other state in the U-S. During our innovative and insightful panel conversation, we take a closer look at how Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska has helped refugees and immigrants find hope in the good life. Our panel was moderated by John Soukup, CSS Development Officer. Panelists included CSS executive director Katie Patrick; Fr. Justin Fulton, former executive director of CSS and now the Vicar General of the Diocese of Lincoln; Faheem Rashidi, an Afghanistan refugee who came to the U.S. in 2000 with his family; and Oleg Stepanyuk, a Ukrainian refugee who came here with his family in 1996. Both Faheem and Oleg, along with their families, were resettled in Lincoln by CSS. Watch to learn more about a refugee's journey and why we are called to "welcome the stranger."

The Heart of Christ Award 2023 Presentation to Shirley Lang

Shirley has humbly made a difference for many of her "almost ninety!" years. Years ago, she and her late husband, Jack, selflessly opened their home (and hearts) to two refugee children resettled by CSS. Years later, one of the young men named his son "Lang" to honor Shirley's status as his "American Mom." Shirley has also worked tirelessly for Lincoln Right to Life from the organization's inception. Katie Patrick, CSS Executive Director, presented the 2023 Heart of Christ Award to Shirley Lang at our Celebration of Hope event on Saturday, March 11th. Shirley's beautiful acceptance speech shares how she has reflected the heart of Christ in these ways and so much more.
